Yom HashoahYom Hashoah
Before Anne Frank: Young Jews in Interwar Poland Tell their Life Stories
Sunday, April 23, 2017
10:45 am
Multi-generational event for adults and teens. Additionally, candles during the morning program will be lit by survivors and second generation families.

Part of remembering the Holocaust is understanding the lives of European Jews leading up to the outbreak of WWII. Rich descriptions of this period are found in autobiographies written by Jewish adolescents in pre-war Poland. These portraits offer revealing insights into a period often described very differently in the postwar memoirs of Holocaust survivors.

Jeffrey ShandlerAdults and young adults will read evocative selections of autobiographies written by teenagers before the war and discuss their meaning with Professor Jeffrey Shandler, Professor and Chair of Jewish Studies at Rutgers University who has edited several books about Jewish life in pre-war Europe.

After the talk, Hebrew School students will join for a short memorial service including recitation of names, candle lighting in memory of victims, the prayer El Maleh Rahamim, and mourner's Kaddish.

Please note: Teenagers and young adults are encouraged to attend. The focus is on adolescents writing about their lives.

Sunday, April 23, 2017
7:30 pm

During evening minyan we will light six candles and recite the memorial prayer.
