Sheila ReinholdA Note from the Music Director

Join us on Sunday afternoon November 11 at 3:00 pm for the opening of our tenth season. Violinist Renée Jolles and cellist James Wilson will join me as we celebrate ten straight seasons of making music together for our wonderful audiences here in at CSAIR, and we will welcome back violist Melissa Reardon for a program of extraordinary masterworks written by young composers, from Vienna of 1798 to Philadelphia of 1946.

Please note that this season all our concerts at CSAIR will be on Sunday afternoons at 3:00 pm. Our audience base has grown over the years, and we hope that this change will enable more of our friends from both near and far to join us in our lovely and acoustically excellent home, the sanctuary of CSAIR.

We will begin our journey with a remarkable and delightful early string quartet by Schubert, written to play with his family when he was only 16, but already showing his unmistakably distinctive voice. Then we will play a brilliantly virtuosic and folkloric duo for violin and viola by the young Hungarian Jewish composer László Weiner, written in 1939 at the age of 23, before his death at the hands of the Nazis in 1944. Weiner's works are only now being rediscovered, and we are excited to present this wonderful music to our audiences. We will continue after intermission with the piercingly beautiful Lyric for Strings by the African-American composer George Walker, winner of the 1996 Pulitzer Prize, who died this past summer. This deeply moving piece, originally the second movement of his String Quartet #1, was written in 1946 when he was 23 years old in memory of his grandmother. Our program will close with the exhilarating energy and passion of Beethoven's Quartet in C minor, Opus 18 No. 4, published in his very first set of string quartets.

Our afternoon will be enhanced by a sampling of fine craft beers courtesy of the Gun Hill Brewing Company, the first of this season's Tastings@IntimateVoices. And as always, there will be refreshments at intermission and the after-concert reception. Admission includes all food and drink.

Doors open at 2:30 for beer-tasting, wine, tea and coffee. Music will begin at 3:00 pm.

Click here to order tickets online by credit card. Tickets can also be purchased at the door by check or cash.

Our expanded community outreach will get underway later in the season, with visits to area nursing homes and the VA Medical Center, school visits for special-needs children, and our free sensory/autism-friendly Family Program welcoming all families to CSAIR. We are also thrilled to tell you that NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital has joined us for the fourth straight season as our Corporate Community Partner. Their generous support – along with your continued donations! – makes all this possible.

Also, please stay tuned for our special 10th Anniversary Celebration, planned for Sunday January 20, 2019 at CSAIR from 5-7 pm. We are thrilled to have reached this milestone, and we would like to thank all our wonderful supporters with a festive gathering! Save the date and check back here in the coming weeks for more details.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday afternoon November 11, and to chatting with you after the concert over a cup of tea or taste of beer!

- Sheila Reinhold

Support Music for Kids and in the Community

When you subscribe to the 3-concert season series, please consider our Music-for-the-Community Package. We believe exposing children to the beauty and excitement of chamber music can inspire their participation in and enjoyment of music-making of all kinds for years to come. Our programs reach out to include all children and families, including those with special needs, through our free sensory/autism-friendly Family Program and our visits to an area special-needs preschool. In addition, we plan to continue our efforts to bring music to our neighbors in nursing and rehab facilities who are not able to come to our home at CSAIR, visiting the James J. Peters VA Medical Center as well as several area nursing homes. But to make these community-building programs possible and available for all, we need your help.

Music-for-the-Community Package
$120: includes 1 subscription to our 3-concert season series, plus a $50 donation (tax-deductible to extent permissible by law) to help underwrite the Community Outreach Programs bringing music to area rehab and nursing facilities, and also featuring our free sensory/autism-friendly Family Program and concerts for special-needs preschoolers.
